Collection: Juliana Scherzer
Juliana Scherzer is a textile artist based in Sydney, Nova Scotia working in free-motion machine embroidery and quilted leaves. Her work reflects the duality of the known and unknown roles of textiles in our everyday lives, as explored through the themes of biology, mending, and environmentalism.
Juliana writes about the connections between her work and our current exhibition Permanent Danger by Anna Torma. "It's very exciting seeing Anna Torma's beautiful and powerful embroidery work on display at Textile Museum of Canada, especially as an artist who works in embroidery myself. There is a fascinating range of possibility and experimentation within the art of embroidery, including between Torma's work and my own. We both utilize natural, organic imagery in the medium of embroidery and layered fabrics, yet our work is executed so differently. Torma's being illustrative, flowing, and teeming with life, and my own being crisp shapes, contrasting lines, and individualized designs. Even within similar imagery the medium gives so much freedom and meaning. Torma's work even exemplifies this in the themes of human experiences throughout her embroideries as they combine with the labour-intensive technique she uses and a style that shows the human hand so clearly in her work. The technique itself and the way it is wielded can say so much on its own."
