Collection: Keiko Shintani
Keiko Shintani is a Toronto-based weaver. Her weaving is the expression of a philosophy that values meaningful work as essential to living well. Her distinctive work is rooted in the arc of the weaver's own life, embracing both Japanese tradition and Western free expression.
Keiko takes to heart a Japanese expression, mottainai (what a waste!), which refers to something valuable that would be wasted if not used. She recycles silk fabric into weft yarn by means of a practice called saki-ori (rag-rug weave) that produces a thick, warm cloth, similar to Canadian woven rag-rug or bed cover called catalogne.
